The Big Ten
Just like we mentioned earlier, we will be featuring articles from guest bloggers which we believe will add to our spiritual growth. This is one of them from Selys Rivera.
If there’s one thing that gets taught over and over again in Sunday school, it’s the Ten Commandments. Sure, they’re easy to memorize, but sometimes it’s difficult to really understand what they mean. Over the years, I’ve had to look into each commandment on my own to figure out what they truly mean.
So, I’ve taken it upon myself to write down my own interpretation of each commandment, with the help of my Teen Study Bible, because I know that I can’t be the only one whose gone through this. Right?

1. “You shall have no other gods before me.” – Exodus 20:3 (NIV)
That’s easy. I just believe in God, that’s it. Right? Nope. Actually, this means
putting God first in life. I think everyone struggles with this. I know that I do, especially when it comes to dating. I always have to remind myself that God comes first, even before that person.
2. “You shall not make for yourself an idol…” – Exodus 20:4 (NIV)
This goes along with the last commandment. This means that no person or thing can be more important to me than God. Facebook, cell phone, TV, etc. all come after God. Always.
3. “You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God…” – Exodus 20:7 (NIV)
“Oh my God! No way! Really?” None of that. “God” isn’t just a word to me. I’m not going to take His name in vain and use it just like any other word. This tells me to use His name in the right way, the most loving way.
4. “Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.” – Exodus 20:8 (NIV)
I’ve heard a lot on the radio lately about people struggling with this, especially when it comes to being an adult and having to go to a job on Sunday. I just think that what this means is to remember to set a special day each week to worship, praise and just be with God and other believers.
5. “Honor your father and your mother…” – Exodus 20:12 (NIV)
I know, no talking back to my mom when she grounds me. I need to show respect for my parents because they brought me into this world and they deserve that respect. (Besides, if I respect them, they’ll respect me.)
6. “You shall not murder.” – Exodus 20:13 (NIV)
That’s easy to understand. No killing! Life is a beautiful gift of God and I have no right to take it away or abuse it.
7. “You shall not commit adultery.” – Exodus 20:14 (NIV)
It’s important to respect others through both my thoughts and actions. Easy example, I would never cheat on my significant other. Just as I wouldn’t want to be disrespected by others, I’m going to return the favor.
8. “You shall not steal.” – Exodus 20:15 (NIV)
Okay, if it’s not mine, I can’t have it. I’m not going to take what’s not mine. If I borrow something, I’m going to return it. Whether it’s clothes, money, test information, if it’s not mine, I’m not going to take it.
9. “You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.” – Exodus 20:16 (NIV)
No lying, no gossiping. I’m not going to ruin someone’s reputation, just like I wouldn’t want someone to ruin mine.
10. “You shall not covet…anything that belongs to your neighbor.” – Exodus 20:17 (NIV)
I’m not going to like someone just because of what they have and be jealous over it because I want it too. Whether they have a cool house, nice clothes, fun video games, I’m going to like someone for who they are. Just like my value doesn’t depend on what I have, I know other people’s value doesn’t depend on what they have either.
The Ten Commandments are important to know. Maybe it’s better, though, to think about them in a way that we can understand instead of just memorizing them. What do you think? Feel free to comment below!
Excuse me. As flattered as I am that you liked my post, I did not say you could post my blog post on yours. Please remove. I don't want to have to report. Thanks.
