WEARY OF DOING GOOD?

Lately, I have been studying the Psalms and today’s meditation took me to Psalm 73. Now, this psalm, I have obviously read before; how do I know this? I had marked my bible here but it seemed like I had never come across this chapter before.

Psalm 73 begins with the psalmist pondering why it seems the wicked flourish, why they seem to be enjoying the fruit of their most of the time wicked labors. Verse 2 says; ‘I almost lost my footing, my feet were slipping for I envied the proud” why? Because they prospered despite their wickedness (verse 3), because they seem to live such painless lives (verse 4), their bodies are healthy and strong (verse 4), they do not have troubles like other people (verse 5), they enjoy a life of ease and their riches multiply. The wicked enjoy all these despite their cruelty, immorality, corruption, wickedness and evil.
This makes us, like the psalmist, question our steadfastness. We wonder why we bother with purity, righteousness, high moral standards and innocence. Verse 18 of this chapter lets us know that the seeming success of the wicked is nothing but a mirage which does not last. I know what you are thinking… yeah right! What about so and so, what about Mr. Man, The Guy, Miss Chic or Mrs. Somebody? These people are obviously corrupt and unrighteous yet we see them enjoying the fruits of their wickedness.
The bible does not mince words when it says that the wicked are instantly destroyed and completely swept away by terrors no matter how long it takes - verses 18 and 19. Also, we only see what they want the world to see; you really do not know what they may be going through. Remember, only he or she who wears the shoes knows how bad it hurts.
This is a call to you and I; a call not to be weary of doing good, a call not to envy the wicked, and a call not to abandon that which is right. Verses 23 and 24 assure us that God holds the hands of the righteous and guides them with His counsel to a glorious destiny. Even though our hearts fail and our spirits grow weak, He remains the strength of our heart because He is ours forever just as we are His (verse 26). Be rest assured that as long as we do not abandon God, we will not perish (verse 27) and we shall enjoy the numerous goodness that comes with being His servant.

No matter how frustrating it is to do good, no matter how increasing foolish it may appear by keeping to our faith, belief and morals; it pays to serve God, it pays to remain in His corner because even when the going gets tough and everything is unbelievably difficult, our trust, our hope and our comfort is drawn from Him who will forever remain the strength of our heart.
