Love Over fear

There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear because fear involves torment. He who fears has not been made perfect in love. – 1 John 4:18

With the help of my Friend, the precious Holy Spirit, I have found the perfect antidote for fear, Love. Now let’s learn how to use love -according to scripture- to drive out fear!
First of all, to defeat an enemy, we must know the very nature of that enemy. You see, Fear, our enemy here, is not just an emotion or an illusion, fear is a spirit. II Timothy 1:7 affirms: God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.”  Okay so we know fear is a spirit, an evil one at that, but how do get rid of the retarded thing?

Well, how did Jesus tackle evil spirits? Did he permit them? Did he pamper them? Of course, He didn’t! Jesus did one thing to evil spirits, He drove them out. No wonder our main text tells us perfect love casts out fear.
If you are like me however you’ve probably wondered, how in the world can love, of all things drive out fear? Fear is a tormenting spirit, an awful emotion that can be so big and consume. Love, on the other hand, is too soft and does not seem like a weapon. What in heaven is this bible talking about! Hold your horses, we’re almost at the very simple answer. But before we learn how to use love -the ultimate weapon- to drive out fear, let us look at the other tools provided in II Timothy:
Power
Let’s face it, we only fear what we have no power or control over. The Israelite soldiers feared Goliath because he was twice their size and seemed extremely powerful. How blind they were. David showed them real power. Jesus -the power of God- never gave us such timidity, He gave us His power instead. The second you realise how powerful you are in Jesus, like the horse in Job 39:19-25, you will mock at fear!
Sound Mind
Like we read in the text, fear torments our minds. Most of our biggest fears are nothing but imaginations. It’s all in the mind. Fear gets its power when we linger on the untrue and ungodly thoughts this spirit drops in us. This is why we need a sound mind. A mind filled with the truth of God’s word, a mind that is assured that God will keep in perfect peace those whose mind is stayed on Him [Isaiah 26:3]. Learn to bring your thoughts into subjection, learn to cast down evil imaginations, think on only true and pleasant things [Philippians 4:8]. Don’t you realise that the spirit of fear himself is scared of you? Turn it around on him. Put him to flight. Let him know the jig is up!
